Crisis Rocks PRP As ADC Bigwigs Eye Party As Alternative

A faction of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), operating under the banner of PRP-Vanguard (Akida), has accused a rival bloc of attempting to hijack the party and abandon its socialist foundations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At a press conference held on Tuesday in Kano, the group described a recent Abuja convention organised by what it called the “Falalu faction” as a “sham,” insisting that the process violated the party’s constitution and legacy.

The faction, led by its National Chairman, Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, also took aim at Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, who was announced as a new national chairman by the rival group.

It claimed Baba Ahmed was never a member of the PRP and accused him of attempting to open the party’s doors to “discredited politicians” from other opposition platforms.

The PRP-Vanguard faction reiterated that the party remains a socialist movement rooted in the struggle of the working class and “talakawa” (masses), warning against what it described as efforts by elite interests, dubbed the “Kaduna Mafia”, to turn the party into a vehicle for capitalist politicians.

It said, “We say this without any apologies. The PRP is a socialist party. It is fighting for the enthronement of socialism in Nigeria and not to replace one exploiter capitalist party in power with another.

“The PRP is the longest serving party of the masses in Nigeria. It was formed by the working class, progressive intellectuals, nationalists, and the toiling masses. It was never created to serve the exploiting classes.

“For Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, who was never a member of the party, but who now claims to preside over its affairs, to have indiscriminately invited notorious politicians in the ADC and other crisis ridden parties to come over to the PRP and pitch their tents, is not just insensitive and disrespectful of the general membership of the party, but authoritarian and feudal as well.

“The Kaduna Mafia is not the PRP. It is the enemy of the PRP. It is the establishment. It is the Arewa umbrella of the ruling class. It is not opposed to capitalist exploitation of the people. It is an entrenchment of the same system that president Tinubu is now using to ride roughshod over the starving bodies of 134 million+ Nigerians.”

“We are therefore employing this opportunity to tell Nigerians the simple truth: The PRP is not for sale to the highest bidder; or to those who are eying it for purchase; we say this: buyer beware. Do not risk your deposit. We are still in court,” the group said.

The faction dismissed calls for reconciliation with the rival bloc, posing questions over the basis for unity, the preservation of the party’s socialist ideology, and the fate of grassroots structures allegedly sidelined by the opposing camp.

According to the group, the crisis reflects a broader struggle between grassroots-driven politics and elite domination. It accused the rival faction of being disconnected from the masses and more interested in political patronage than building a nationwide movement.

Invoking the legacy of the party’s founding leader, Malam Aminu Kano, the faction maintained that the PRP was established as a platform for the poor and working class, not for entrenched political elites.

The group also launched a broader critique of Nigeria’s political and economic system, describing it as a “neocolonial capitalist structure” that has deepened poverty while enriching a small class of elites.

It accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of worsening living conditions and warned against what it alleged could be a repeat of electoral manipulation in 2027.

The PRP-Vanguard faction vowed to continue its fight through legal action, grassroots mobilisation, and media engagement, insisting that the party remains the “Jam’iyyar talakawa” and not a platform for “discredited members of the ruling class.”

It said, “We are not unrealistic. We are not dreamers. We are grounded in the daily realities of our people and their existential challenges under the present regime of slow painful mass deaths delivered by the economic hitman in Aso Rock who still want to continue his high cost of living massacres of our people for another four years after 2027. This Disaster must not happen.

“We the working and toiling people have to intensify our struggle to resist this exploitative bourgeois order. The battle to rescue the PRP from the clutches of the Kaduna Mafia by the masses is part and parcel of this struggle to defeat the Tinubu regime that is out to forcibly usurp power in 2027 as it did in 2023. History must not repeat itself.

“The PRP will continue its struggle on all fronts: the courts, the grassroots, and the media for conscientisation and mass education.

“The PRP is still the ‘Jamiyar talakawa’ (party of the masses), and not the party of the discredited ruling class and their underlings. So it was, is, and shall remain.”

“The struggle is our joy. Freedom is our bond. Democracy is our choice. None but ourselves can free our party. Victory is our destiny,” the statement added.
