Woman Dies After Doctor Forgot Scissors In Stomach During Surgery In Lagos

A Lagos-based media personality, Beady Nnanna, has recounted how alleged medical negligence led to the death of her 44-year-old sister, Blessing Okolie, following fibroid surgery at a private hospital in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

Speaking with PUNCH, Nnanna, the producer of Beadysworld TV and publisher of Beadysworld Blog News, alleged that a doctor at the facility left a pair of scissors inside her sister’s stomach during surgery — a development she said ultimately led to her death after days of agony.

According to her, Blessing had long battled a severe fibroid condition that had significantly affected her life and marriage.

“She had a fibroid, and it was very big, as if she was pregnant. Even when people saw her, they mistook her for being pregnant. That fibroid was really disturbing, and she was married,” Nnanna said.

She added that the condition contributed to the collapse of Blessing’s marriage.

“But the husband left her because of that fibroid. She couldn’t give birth to a child. When my mother reached out to him, he said, ‘You know that your daughter has a problem with fibroids,’ as if it had become a crime,” she recounted.

Nnanna explained that after years of emotional and physical distress, her sister became determined to undergo surgery in hopes of improving her chances of having a child.

Trouble, however, began with the choice of hospital.

“In December 2025, we took her to the Air Force Base Hospital, but she declined. She insisted on going to a particular hospital in Igoke Estate around Abule Egba. I objected because the place did not look standard, but she said someone recommended it,” she said.

On March 27, 2026, Nnanna accompanied her sister to the facility for the procedure — a visit she said immediately raised concerns.

“That was my first time there. We met the doctor standing outside, and honestly, I was not satisfied with what I saw. The hospital didn’t look standard at all,” she said.

Despite her reservations, the surgery went ahead the following morning.

“She entered the theatre at exactly 7:22 am, and by 11:49 am, they said the surgery was done. But instead of proper post-operative care, they brought her out and laid her on a bench,” she alleged.

Nnanna described a series of actions she considered abnormal, including attempts to give the patient tea and milk shortly after surgery.

“I challenged them. How do you give tea and milk to someone who just had surgery? They said she needed energy to climb the staircase because the ward was upstairs,” she said.

She added that her sister was made to walk shortly after the operation, despite being in visible pain.

Days after the surgery, her condition began to deteriorate.

“On Monday, she complained of pain in her abdomen. By Wednesday, her stomach started swelling. I told the doctor something was wrong and requested a scan, but he kept saying there was no problem,” she said.

According to Nnanna, her repeated requests for diagnostic tests were ignored.

“They accused me of trying to teach them their job. Meanwhile, her stomach kept swelling. I was begging for a scan, but they refused,” she added.

The situation worsened when a greenish substance reportedly began draining from her sister’s body.

“They inserted a pipe in her nose and started draining something greenish. Yet, they still refused to do a scan,” she said.

It was not until a new doctor reportedly intervened that a scan was eventually approved — but even then, challenges persisted.

“They gave me a letter to go for a scan, but the first lab said they had not done scans for over two years. I was furious. We eventually went to Clinix and paid over N90,000,” she explained.

The result, she said, was devastating.

“When I read it, it stated that a metal was inside her stomach below the abdomen. I broke down in tears,” she said.

Nnanna claimed that upon presenting the result to the hospital, the staff appeared shocked and ashamed.

“They didn’t say anything. You could see the shame all over them,” she said.

A second surgery was then carried out on April 7 to remove the object.

“They said they had removed what was in her belly, but her condition did not improve. She was still very weak,” she said.

Despite her repeated pleas for referral to better-equipped hospitals such as Lagos University Teaching Hospital or Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Nnanna alleged that the facility refused.

“They kept saying she would be fine. Meanwhile, her condition kept deteriorating,” she said.

The situation took a critical turn when the hospital reportedly ran out of fuel for its generator while her sister was on oxygen.

“I asked them to turn on the generator, and they said they didn’t have fuel. It was around 3 am. I started shouting and threatened to burn down the hospital,” she said.

Eventually, she transported her sister herself, without medical support, to LASUTH.

“At LASUTH, they said there was no space at first. I begged them to treat her in the car. Eventually, they started treatment and said she would be admitted to the ICU,” she said.

According to her, the family spent over N2 million on treatment, drugs, and tests in both hospitals.

However, the situation did not improve.

“They called us early in the morning and said her heart had stopped. They tried to revive her, but she passed. That was how my sister died,” she said.

Nnanna believes her sister could have been saved if proper care had been given earlier.

“If they had done a scan the second day after surgery, they would have detected the object earlier. But by the time they removed it, most of her organs were already infected,” she said.

She confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police but said no concrete action has been taken.

“They referred us to Zone 2, but we’ve not received any update,” she said.

Calling for justice, she added, “That hospital needs to be shut down. My sister is dead now, but I don’t want others to experience what she went through. That is why I am clamouring for justice. The government needs to investigate and shut down the hospital.”

Responding to the allegations, Dr. Abiodun Ojifinni, Medical Director of OAR Medical Centre, confirmed that Blessing Okolie underwent a myomectomy at the facility on March 28, 2026.

“She was fine initially but a few days after the surgery there were complications of sepsis, which is a bacterial infection, after the surgery,” he said.

Ojifinni stated that the patient was later referred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital at the insistence of her family.

“We were managing the situation until the family, especially Beady, asked for a referral because she wasn’t satisfied with the progress her sister was making on treatment. At her insistence, we referred her to the Lagos State University of Teaching Hospital, where we later learnt that she passed on after a few days of admission.,” he said.

He dismissed circulating claims as premature.

“There are half-truths and falsehoods on social media. We should wait for the autopsy. The real cause of death will be determined through histopathology,” he said.

On whether a pair of scissors was found in the patient’s body, he declined to give a direct answer.

“It is not right to make conclusions now. We should wait for the coroner’s inquest,” he added.

Ojifinni confirmed that a government-backed inquest is underway.

“There is an autopsy request that was made at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. The real cause of death will be spelt out in histopathology. That is the most authentic cause of death test that we all should wait for. We enjoined Ms Beady to take things easy and find a way of talking to her.

“I know she still hurts by the turn of events at the end of the day. We did not want anything to happen to any of our patients. She might not remember that Blessing was actually a friend, apart from being a patient in my hospital. So, we are eagerly awaiting the results of the autopsy. As you know, when something is awaiting a coroner’s inquest, then we have to wait and hear from the pathologist.

“The late Blessing departed at LASUTH, and part of their requirements is that once there is a controversy in the cause of death, they will go ahead to do a coroner’s inquest, and that is what everybody is waiting for. We all should talk to Beady to take things easy, and let’s look at the natural cause of death together.”
