In what is being described as a major political turning point, leaders of Nigeria’s opposition parties have unanimously agreed to present a single presidential candidate against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming 2027 general election.
The landmark resolution was reached at a high-profile opposition summit held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where top political figures gathered under the theme: “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy”.
The summit brought together some of Nigeria’s most influential opposition voices, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
After intense deliberations, the leaders resolved to set aside political differences and personal ambitions in favor of a united front aimed at unseating the current administration in 2027.
The event, featured notable personalities in governance and policy discourse, while emphasizing unity, democratic sustainability, and credible elections as core objectives of the emerging coalition.
Political observers say the Ibadan agreement signals the beginning of a formidable alliance that could redefine Nigeria’s electoral landscape, setting the stage for a fierce and highly competitive 2027 presidential contest.
