GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has harped on the importance of government ensuring it pays its contractors.
Mahama made these remark in a humorous, light-hearted manner during a speech at the Kwahu Business Forum this month.
While discussing his administration’s flagship infrastructure initiative, known as the “Big Push”, Mahama used the example to illustrate the “multiplier effect” of government spending.

His broader point was that paying contractors promptly does not just benefit the construction firm, but stimulates the entire economy.
– The “Ripple Effect” Explanation
The President joked that once contractors are paid, they spend money on luxury goods and personal lives, which then trickles down into various service industries.
He noted that when contractors receive payments, they may buy luxury cars (like Land Cruisers) or give money to their spouses and “side chicks”.
These individuals then spend that money at hairdressers, dressmakers, jewelry shops, and handbag sellers.
He also highlighted more conventional beneficiaries, such as engineers, carpenters, and food vendors selling local meals like waakye and banku at project sites.
The remarks drew loud laughter and applause from the auditorium at the time with the “side chick economics” comment quickly went viral on social media platforms.
While the specific mention of “side chicks” was a joke, it was intended to underscore the serious economic argument that public infrastructure spending is a vital tool for wealth circulation across all layers of society.
Key Takeaway:
The statement was a rhetorical device used to simplify complex economic circulation, using a relatable (if controversial) cultural reference to explain how government funds reach the “man and woman on the street.”
