PUBLIC NOTICE ON ALLEGED HARASSMENT AND IMPERSONATION OF POLICE OFFICERS IN IBARAPA
The Leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, wishes to formally bring to the attention of the general public and the entire student populace of Ibarapa a disturbing development involving the alleged harassment and intimidation of youths and students by a group of individuals purportedly claiming to be officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
We have received credible reports regarding the activities of these individuals, who have allegedly been moving across communities within Ibarapa, forcefully raiding student residences and apprehending unsuspecting youths.
According to testimonies gathered from victims, this group identifies themselves as operatives of the “FCID” and has been unlawfully transporting students to Alagbon, Lagos State, with the intent of extorting them without due process or the knowledge and consent of the recognized police authorities within the locality.
In response to these serious allegations, the leadership of NANS Southwest, through the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Deputy Coordinator, has taken immediate steps to address the situation.
We have engaged directly with affected victims to obtain firsthand accounts and have also held consultations with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Igboora Police Station to verify whether such operations were duly authorized or officially recognized.
At this stage, we find these claims highly troubling and difficult to reconcile with standard operational procedures of legitimate law enforcement agencies. While investigations are still ongoing, it is imperative to state that any individual or group found impersonating security operatives or engaging in unlawful arrests and extortion will be exposed and made to face the full weight of the law.
The leadership of NANS Southwest strongly condemns any form of harassment, intimidation, or exploitation of students and youths under any guise. We remain resolute in our commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and safety of Nigerian students at all times.
We therefore call on the appropriate security agencies to urgently investigate this matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.
We also urge students and residents of Ibarapa to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while promptly reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest legitimate security authority or NANS representatives.
Further updates will be communicated to the public as investigations progress.
