A 60-year-old man in Kazaure Local Government Area of Jigawa State has been burnt to death by his biological son.
The son, 27-year-old Kabiru Nuhu, had allegedly poured a flammable substance, believed to be petrol, on the victim and ignited it.
It is unclear why he took the action but the Jigawa State Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the tragic incident.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, the incident occurred in the early hours of April 1, 2026, at Lokon Malamai, via Magama Quarters in Kazaure town.
Adam said the Police received a distress report at about 6:30 a.m. that the victim had been set ablaze by an unidentified individual.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the attack took place about 30 minutes before the distress call was made.
Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was reportedly found with fresh burn injuries on his forehead, arms, and toes, raising suspicions about his involvement in the incident.
The victim was later referred to a higher medical facility for advanced treatment but was confirmed dead while receiving care.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, Haruna Alaba Yahaya, condemned the act, describing it as heinous and unacceptable.
He assured residents that the command would ensure justice is served.
The police commissioner also urged members of the public to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and promptly report cases of domestic violence or disputes to security agencies.
Authorities have called for calm as investigations continue, assuring that further updates will be made available to the public.
