Missing UNIJOS Final-Year Student Found Dead

Adeyemo Temitope, a 500-level quantity surveying student at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau state, has been found dead.

His close friend, Meshak Gimba, a 400-level psychology student at the university, announced his death via X on Friday.

“Adeyemo Oluwafemi Temitope has now been confirmed dead. He has been found, but not alive,” Gimba wrote.

Temitope’s body was found three days after he was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants in Jos, the state capital.

Speaking to TheCable, Gimba said he had initially circulated Temitope’s picture on social media, declaring him missing, but received a call on Friday directing him to the University Teaching Hospital, where he found the body.

“We initially thought he went missing, and that was why I posted and circulated his picture on Facebook and included my number in case anyone finds him,” he said.

“But we got a call earlier today to come to the hospital, where we saw his corpse.”

According to Gimba, the student’s body was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary on Wednesday by local security operatives, who claimed he was attacked by yet-to-be-identified persons.

“The officials at the hospital said the security operatives told them he was coming from the market that morning when unknown persons attacked and killed him at Bauchi junction, close to the hostel,” Gimba added.

He said Tanko Ishaya, the university’s vice-chancellor, had promised to contact the deceased’s family for proper identification.

The development was also confirmed by Agama Solomon, the university’s chief security officer.

“On Wednesday, he was declared missing. This morning, we were told that his corpse is at the university teaching hospita,” Solomon told TheCable.

So, myself, the vice-chancellor, dean of student affairs, and other staff went to the hospital to find out whether truly that was his corpse.

“And we discovered that indeed, it was his corpse. His close friend identified him, saying he is the one,” he added.

Solomon said the university management had informed the family and was expecting them to arrive soon to begin preparations for a joint burial.

Alfred Alabo, police spokesperson in Plateau, was not immediately available for comments when contacted by TheCable, as he did not take calls or respond to text messages.

Temitope’s death comes three days after about 28 people were killed, and several others injured at Angwan Rukuba, a community neighbouring the university in Jos north LGA.

Following the heightened tension trailing the suspected bandit attack, the university management ordered the immediate evacuation of students from hostels on Wednesday.

The university had earlier suspended all examinations scheduled for the week, rescheduling them until after the Easter celebration due to rising security concerns in the state.
