The Iranian Foreign Ministry has officially dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Tehran requested a ceasefire, calling it “false and baseless”.
On April 1, 2026, Trump posted on Truth Social that Iran’s “New Regime President” had asked for a truce. However, Iranian officials and state media quickly rejected this, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stating that no such request was made.
Trump claimed a “much less Radicalized” Iranian leader sought a ceasefire. He stated the U.S. would only consider the request once the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free, and clear,” warning that otherwise, the U.S. would continue “blasting Iran into oblivion”.
Beyond the official denial, Iranian officials characterized the claim as a “delusion”. President Masoud Pezeshkian, whom Trump may have been referring to, has been in power since 2024 and noted that while Iran has the “will to end the war,” it would not do so under threats.
“Trump’s statements about Iran’s request for a ceasefire are false and baseless,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei was quoted as saying.
Despite the claims of potential peace, the conflict remains active. Reports indicate that heavy U.S. and Israeli strikes have targeted Tehran, while Iran has continued launching missiles toward Israel.
These conflicting reports and the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz have caused global oil prices to surge, reaching over $105 per barrel.
Trump is expected to provide further updates in a primetime address, where he may reiterate his timeline for “finishing the job” in Iran within two to three weeks.
