FLASH: Wike-backed PDP Elects Mohammed, Anyanwu As Chairman, Secretary

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has affirmed Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.

About 2,500 delegates in Abuja on Sunday endorsed the 19-member NWC and other national officers.

The motion was moved by House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, and seconded by Usaman Admu.

The affirmed officers include Aaron Chukwuemeka (Deputy National Chairman, South), Yusufu Nya Akirikwen (SAN) (Deputy National Chairman, North), Kolawale Olabisi (Deputy National Secretary), Odeyemei Mackson Oladiran (National Treasurer), and Lado Dan Marke (Deputy National Treasurer), among others.

Also listed are Eyim Donatus Henry, Dr Grema Kyari, Umar Mohammed Bature, Efere Augustine, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, Egwu Goodluck Chidiebere, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), Barr. Aloysius Chinemelu U. Uba, Osuoha Okechukwu Donatus, Dr Adaba Yatu, Ibrahim Bala Aboki, and Momoh Dejih Eugene Bashir, while Professor Ogunshe Adedayo and Hauwa Ahmed Shinge serve as National Women Leader and Deputy National Women Leader, respectively.

Speaking to delegates, Wike said members gathered “as a congregation of victorious men and women whose badge of honour remains the umbrella” of the PDP. He noted that the party had weathered a “tragic crisis of leadership” that once threatened its survival.

“Standing firmly with the umbrella, we overcame a tragic crisis of leadership so huge that it threatened to destroy our beautiful party.

“Together we fought against proponents of ethnic and geographic divisions and trounced the naysayers who abandoned the core values upon which the party was built,” he said.

Wike added that the struggle helped restore internal democracy within the party.

“We fought and returned the party to its rightful owners, the people,” he said, describing the outcome as a reaffirmation of the PDP’s founding principles.

The former governor commended party members for their resilience during the period of turmoil.

“You showed exemplary resilience when push came to shove.

“You refused to be downcast when those who pretended to be leaders betrayed you. You stayed the course of the night in the stubborn faith that morning would inevitably come — and here we are,” he told delegates.

He also praised grassroots supporters across the country for remaining loyal despite defections by some political elites.

“While opportunistic elites gyrated from one party to another in pursuit of selfish purposes, our members remained faithful.

“They prayed fervently for a renaissance, and today, that renaissance is here,” the minister added.

Looking ahead, Wike stressed the need for unity and inclusion as the party rebuilds.

“The path to the future for our party must be paved with the values of inclusiveness, unity and renewal.

“No one would be excluded, and everyone would be given an equal opportunity to serve in unity and love,” he stated.

He called on both old and new members to recommit to the party’s ideals.

Wike said, “We must all pledge to a renewal of our commitment, loyalty, and dedication.

“This party was built as a people’s party, and we must create legitimate channels through which the people’s voices must be heard and upheld.”

According to the minister’s spokesperson, Olayinka Lere, over 2,000 delegates are currently at the national convention being held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Lere also disclosed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission are present at the venue.

GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that the convention is being held amid an internal crisis and despite ongoing legal disputes over a previous convention by the governor bloc of the party in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
