The Defence Headquarters has dismissed as misleading a viral social media post that distorted comments made by the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, regarding Operation Safe Corridor.
It clarified that the programme is not an amnesty initiative but part of a broader counter insurgency strategy.
According to the military, the viral post selectively framed the remarks to wrongly suggest that the Armed Forces of Nigeria prioritise leniency for terrorists over justice for victims. It described the interpretation as inaccurate and harmful to national security efforts.
The Defence Headquarters explained that Operation Safe Corridor is a structured deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme designed for surrendered, screened, and low risk former combatants. It stressed that the initiative complements both kinetic and non kinetic approaches in counter insurgency operations.
It added that hundreds of participants have passed through the programme since inception, contributing intelligence that has supported ongoing operations against insurgent networks.
Clarifying the CDS remarks, the military said he was speaking during a professional doctrine lecture where he highlighted global practices that combine rehabilitation with operational success. It maintained that any suggestion of sympathy for terrorists is a misrepresentation.
The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to neutralising active threats while continuing ongoing operations across conflict zones.
It noted that Operation Safe Corridor applies strictly to individuals who voluntarily disengage and meet required screening standards.
