A forum under the aegis of Ndigbo For Tinubu 2027 (NDI-ABAT), a coalition of pro-Tinubu Igbo groups, has stated that an Obi/Kwankwaso ticket is not a threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the National Coordinator and Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Dr Ugwuoke Ugwuoke respectively, the group said there are multiple indications that former governors, Mr Peter Obi and Engr Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso, are contemplating a joint presidential ticket under a yet-to-be-disclosed political party, noting that it will not be under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to the statement, intelligence reports obtained by the group indicate that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is actively involved in facilitating a joint presidential ticket between Obi and Kwankwaso for the 2027 elections.
It further claimed that Kwankwaso has already accepted to be Obi’s vice-presidential candidate and running mate in an opposition political party other than the ADC.
The group also stated that recent developments in Kano State form part of the alleged political strategy, noting that Obi’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration visit to Kano, where he was received at Kwankwaso’s residence, was a deliberate political signal.
It said the visit was intended to show that the two former 2023 presidential candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have aligned to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.
However, the forum argued that the ticket may face internal setbacks, alleging that the political associates of both leaders, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, are working towards Tinubu’s re-election.
It also identified the stance of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a major obstacle, noting that he has shown no willingness to step down for the proposed alliance.
The group added that, given the ongoing registration of ADC members across the country, the odds favour Atiku to secure the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The forum expressed confidence that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, would lead Southeast governors in delivering votes from the region to President Tinubu.
It added that it is currently mobilising support among Ndigbo across the country for Tinubu’s re-election.
“We are targeting 13 million Igbo votes for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid,” the forum stated.
“We are confident that Tinubu will defeat both the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket and a possible Atiku/Amaechi ticket in the 2027 presidential election.”
