At least six persons have been confirmed dead, while several others were injured, after a petrol-laden tanker lost control and crushed commuters in Ibadan.
GISTSMATE MEDIA gathered that the accident also destroyed about eight motorcycles and damaged several cars.
Reports indicate that the 33,000-litre tanker, owned by a major petroleum marketing company, suffered brake failure while descending from Beere Roundabout in the city.
Sources revealed that three people were killed initially as the driver attempted to regain control, injuring other road users as the truck dragged along.
The tanker eventually lost complete control after navigating through Oja’Oba and crashed violently at Beere Junction, ramming into vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians along the route.
Eyewitnesses said the heaviest destruction occurred at Iso-Osan, popularly known as Orange Market, where the trailer caused significant havoc.
Security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps and local police, responded promptly to maintain order. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Mapo Police Station, while injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The incident has left residents mourning, with business activities in the area largely disrupted. Authorities reportedly moved the tanker to a nearby petrol station to safely offload its contents.
Traders at the scene expressed mixed reactions: some gave thanks for escaping harm, while others struggled to come to terms with the scale of the tragedy.
