Oyo 2027: Group Throws Weight Behind Compol Fatai Owoseni

A socio-political group, Oyo Lagba Forum (The Oyo Leadership Forum), has called on a retired Commissioner of Police, Fatai Ajani Owoseni, to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, describing him as the most recommended candidate to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde.

In a statement signed by Barrister Shina Oke, the group said Oyo State is at a critical juncture as it prepares for a transition of power after the expiration of Makinde’s tenure in May 2027.

It noted that while debates around power shift, religion, and generational change have dominated discussions, competence and character should take precedence.

“Our take is not to dwell on inanities or matters that hold no key towards the progress of our state,” the statement read.

“Governors would come, governors would go, but capacity to perform, inherent Omoluabi content, and value addition matter more.”

The forum emphasized the need to preserve and build on the state’s legacy, citing historic landmarks such as the University of Ibadan and Cocoa House.

According to the group, “This is a legacy we need to guard jealously and even improve upon. The leadership recruitment process is key to that.”

Highlighting Owoseni’s credentials, the group pointed to his 35-year career in the Nigeria Police Force and his roles in public service, including his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Lagos and Benue states, as well as his service as Chairman of the Oyo State Security Trust Fund.

“His pedigree as a well-trained Police Officer who had a distinguished career in the Force fully recommends him for the job,” the forum stated.

“He is not just a competent officer; he is a good leader who can be trusted with power.”

The group also credited Owoseni with contributing to the strengthening of Oyo State’s security architecture, including the expansion of CCTV coverage and improved communication systems among security agencies.

“It is to his credit that many states of the federation have visited Oyo State to borrow the security architecture he facilitated,” the statement added.

Raising concerns about growing insecurity in neighbouring states, the forum warned that Oyo must be proactive in safeguarding its territory.

It referenced recent security threats around the Old Oyo National Park as a reminder of the need for experienced leadership.

“We cannot play the ostrich and deny the reality that insecurity is fast encircling our neighbours,” the group said.

“It is incumbent on us to allow a tested warrior to lead the battle in times of war.”

The forum concluded by urging stakeholders and residents across the state to support Owoseni’s potential candidacy.

“He ticks all the boxes that guarantee good governance and enhanced security,” the statement declared.

“We are beckoning on him to throw his hat into the ring. His governorship will do Oyo State a world of good.”
