Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has stated that the country does not seek to acquire nuclear weapons, emphasising that such arms are considered religiously forbidden under the country’s leadership.
In a Nowruz message reported by state media, Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran has no intention of pursuing war with its neighbours, instead calling for peace and cooperation across the region.
He stressed that Iran’s position on nuclear weapons is rooted in religious doctrine, citing the stance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who has declared nuclear weapons to be prohibited.
According to the president, no Iranian officials are permitted to pursue plans to obtain such arms.
“Our difficulties are the result of the interference of enemies,” Pezeshkian said. “Our dear neighbours who surround us, you are our brothers … we have come to resolve all these differences with you.”
The president also called for stronger regional collaboration, proposing the creation of a security framework led by Islamic countries to maintain peace and stability.
Iran, he said, does not require external involvement to ensure regional security. “We do not need the presence of outsiders in the region,” Pezeshkian added.
His remarks come amid continued international scrutiny over Iran’s nuclear programme, with Tehran maintaining that its activities are strictly for peaceful purposes and guided by both political and religious principles.
This development and comment negates Donald Trump claim that Iran is pursuing ownership of nuclear weapons. The United States President also vowed to put a stop to such.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that the Director of the United States (US) National Counterterrorism Center, Joseph Kent, resigned from his position, citing strong opposition to the ongoing war in Iran and raising concerns over the motivations behind the conflict.
In a resignation letter addressed to US President, Donald Trump, Kent said his decision followed “much reflection,” noting that his resignation takes immediate effect.
“After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today,” he wrote.
Kent said he could no longer align himself with the administration’s current foreign policy direction, particularly the decision to engage militarily with Iran.
“I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” he stated.
He emphasised that his stance was rooted in principles he believed had previously guided US policy.
“I support the values and the foreign policies that you campaigned on in 2016, 2020, 2024, which you enacted in your first term. Until June of 2025, you understood that the wars in the Middle East were a trap that robbed America of the precious lives of our patriots and depleted the wealth and prosperity of our nation,” Kent added.
The outgoing counterterrorism chief also accused “high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media” of promoting what he described as a misinformation campaign.
According to him, this effort “wholly undermined your America First platform and sowed pro-war sentiments” that encouraged military action against Iran.
He further argued that US leadership had been misled. “This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that should you strike now, there was a clear path to a swift victory. This was a lie,” he said, comparing the situation to the circumstances that led to the Iraq war.
