Iran’s state media released a statement reportedly written by Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday, warning that Tehran will avenge the blood of its martyrs.
Khamenei – who has not been seen in public his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed on 28 February – is reported to have said this is especially true of the victims of an airstrike at an elementary school in Minab, where Iran says 175 people, mostly children were killed.
In the message read by a state broadcaster, the 56-year-old leader said all US bases in the region should be closed, threatening future attacks.
The statement claimed Iran still has a policy of “friendship” with its neighbours, but signalled Iran would continue its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of leverage to pressure the US.
The new supreme leader is reported to have sustained injuries in US-Israeli strikes, but there have been conflicting reports about their severity.
It came as the International Energy Agency warned that the world is now facing the worst oil supply disruption in history, with oil prices surging past $100 per barrel again after more fuel tankers were struck in the Gulf this morning.
Mojtaba Khamenei’s statement was read by Iranian state broadcasters on Thursday, but the supreme leader himself has not been seen in public in recent weeks.
Israeli intelligence said Khamenei was lightly injured during recent US-Israeli strikes, while the New York Times also reported that the 56-year-old was injured but stable and had not appeared in public due to fears of being targeted.
Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian, said that he had been told by friends that Khamenei was hurt but “healthy and there is no problem”.

In a statement read by a state broadcaster, and reportedly by Mojtaba Khamenei, the leader called for unity among Iranians from “all walks of life” and threatened revenge for war casualties, relating his own experience after his father was killed on the first day of the war.
“This is something that I share with the people who have lost their ones because I lost my father, I lost my wife. My sister lost her child as well as the husband who has been martyred,” he said.
“But what it makes it easier for us to endure all these plights is to trust the grace of God and to know that patience is going to resolve it. I assure everyone that we will not ignoring the fact that we are going to revenge our martyrs.”
Millions displaced inside Iran, says UN
The United Nations Refugee Agency has said that up to 3.2 million people have been displaced inside Iran since the outbreak of war on 28 February.
Humanitarian groups also warn that up to one million people have been displaced in Lebanon.
In a post on Truth Social, ahead of the Iranian leader’s address, Donald Trump says that the US benefits when oil prices go up, amid backlash over the impact of the war on energy costs.
“The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money. BUT, of far greater interest and importance to me, as President, is stoping an evil Empire, Iran, from having Nuclear Weapons, and destroying the Middle East and, indeed, the World,” he writes [sic].
