Nine senators in the National Assembly on Thursday announced their defection from their respective political parties to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crises and political disagreements within their former platforms.
The lawmakers left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Five of the defecting senators ā Dauda Yaroe, Lawal Usman, Ogochi Onawe, Aminu Tambuwal and Austin Akobundu ā resigned from the PDP.
Three others ā Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye ā left the Labour Party.
The remaining senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, defected from APGA.
Eight of the senators who exited the PDP and LP attributed their decisions to lingering leadership crises and internal divisions within their parties.
However, Abaribe explained that his departure from APGA followed the partyās decision to remove him as a member in September 2025.
The wave of defections marks a significant boost for the ADC and signals ongoing political realignments ahead of future electoral contests in Nigeria.
