The United States has announced plans to place the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood under terrorism sanctions, with the designation expected to take effect later this month.
The plan was disclosed on Monday in a press statement by the United States Department of State, signed by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
In the statement titled âTerrorist Designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood,â Rubio said the department had designated the group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and intends to list it as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation effective March 16, 2026.
âToday, the Department of State is designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and intends to designate the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, effective March 16, 2026,â Rubio stated.
He alleged that the group had been involved in violence against civilians amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
âThe Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood uses unrestrained violence against civilians to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan and advance its violent Islamist ideology. Its fighters, many receiving training and other support from Iranâs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have conducted mass executions of civilians,â the statement said.
Rubio also noted that the groupâs al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade had previously been sanctioned.
âThe Sudanese Muslim Brotherhoodâs al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade was designated pursuant to Executive Order 14098 in September 2025 for its role in Sudanâs brutal war,â he added.
The US Secretary of State further accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of supporting extremist activities.
âAs the worldâs leading state sponsor of terrorism, the Iranian regime has financed and directed malign activities globally through its IRGC. The United States will use all available tools to deprive the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism,â Rubio said.
According to the statement, the action was taken pursuant to Section 219 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, which empowers the government to designate and sanction terrorist organisations.
