United States President, Donald Trump, has reacted to the appointment of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, saying he has no message for him.
Trump made the remark in an interview with CBS News after Mojtaba Khamenei was named Iran’s leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed early in the campaign involving the United States and Israel.
When asked about the new Iranian leader, whom he has previously criticised, the US president said, “I have no message for him. None, whatsoever.”
Trump also said he has someone in mind to replace Khamenei, but did not provide further details.
Tribune Online reports that Iran announced Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader early Monday through state-run media after he was selected by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of senior clerics responsible for choosing the country’s supreme leader.
The body has taken such a decision only once before since the Iranian Revolution. At the time, Ali Khamenei was chosen to succeed Ruhollah Khomeini after his death more than three decades ago
