Pakistan Launches Air Strikes On Kabul As Tensions With Afghanistan Escalate Into ‘Open War’

Pakistan has launched air strikes on major cities in Afghanistan, including the capital, as spiraling tensions between the two neighbors erupted into what Islamabad described as “open war.”

Jets and loud explosions were reported overnight in Kabul and Kandahar as Pakistani forces targeted what officials called Taliban defense positions. The strikes mark one of the most serious escalations between the two countries in years.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, announced a complete confrontation with the Taliban government, stating that Islamabad’s tolerance had reached its limit following months of border conflicts.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar verified that strikes had been carried out in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar.

The latest aerial bombardment followed attacks by Afghan forces on Pakistani border troops late Thursday night, according to Pakistani officials.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated sharply in recent months, with most border crossings closed since deadly fighting in October left more than 70 people dead on both sides.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused Kabul of failing to curb the activities of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has claimed responsibility for several attacks inside Pakistan since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. The Taliban government denies backing the group.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s armed forces were fully capable of crushing any aggression against the country.

On the Afghan side, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the air strikes but said there were no casualties in Kabul.

However, Afghanistan’s defense ministry reported that eight of its soldiers were killed in land clashes along the border. An Afghan official also said civilians were wounded near the Torkham crossing after a mortar shell struck a camp for returnees.

Previous attempts at mediation by countries including Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia failed to secure a lasting ceasefire. Iran has now offered to facilitate dialogue between the two sides.

The escalation has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, as diplomatic efforts struggle to contain the rapidly worsening crisis.
