Protesters at the National Assembly were teargassed by the Nigeria Police Force personnel during Tuesdayâs demonstration over the Senateâs approval of both electronic transmission and manual collation of election results.
Per online reports, chaos ensued at the main entrance when some demonstrators tried to force their way into the building.
The above led to panic, with some of the protesters, including women, falling over each other in their bid to escape the tear gas. An elderly woman was said to have fainted after inhaling the fumes.
Speaking on the development, popular activist Omoyele Sowore referred to the police action as a direct attack on democracy.
âThis has translated to a declaration of war on Nigerians, a war against participatory democracy.
âFor the first time, the police were using compressed containers that penetrate through your skin. Over two people have collapsed, and weâre calling on Nigerians to head down to the National Assembly,â Sowore stated.
Speaking further, he said that demonstrators were only demanding access to the gallery during an emergency session.
Sowore further argued that Nigerian citizens ought to have the right to monitor proceedings in the National Assembly.
âWe were asking them, when you visit from another country, you have access to the Capitol Hall.
âWhy canât we get into our own National Assembly without being separated from the so-called elected representatives of the people?
âWe must be part of the gallery where the emergency meeting is holding so we can monitor what is within our rights as citizens,â he added.
