The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslims across Nigeria to begin the search for the crescent moon marking the start of Ramadan 1447 AH on Tuesday, February 17.
According to the Sultan, if the crescent is sighted on Tuesday, fasting will commence on Wednesday, February 18. However, if the moon is not sighted, Ramadan will begin on Thursday, February 19.
The directive is in line with Islamic tradition, which requires the physical sighting of the crescent moon to determine the beginning of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
Muslims nationwide have been urged to report any credible moon sighting to appropriate religious authorities in their respective locations.
Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, observed by Muslims through fasting, prayers, charity and spiritual reflection.
