Terrorists on Tuesday night attacked Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing several villagers and setting many houses ablaze.
Checks revealed that the assailants invaded the communities in large numbers at about 6:00 p.m., unleashing violence that left families mourning their dead and properties destroyed.
A community leader in the area confirmed that no fewer than 10 people were killed during the attack, while many houses were burnt by the attackers.
He said the bandits were suspected to be operating from the forest area of the Borgu National Park in neighbouring Niger State, from where they launched the coordinated assault on the communities.
The Kwara State Government confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye.
In the statement, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed sadness over the attack and extended his condolences to the affected communities.
“Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is saddened by the cowardly attack on civilians in Woro and Nuku communities of Kaiama Local Government Area,” the statement said.
The governor condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly expression of frustration” by terrorist elements in response to sustained counterterrorism operations across the state.
According to him, the attack appeared to be an attempt to distract security forces who have recorded successes in dismantling terrorist and kidnapping gangs in different parts of Kwara State.
“Governor AbdulRazaq says the attack was apparently to distract the security forces who have successfully hunted down several terrorist and kidnapping gangs across many parts of the state,” the statement added.
The governor expressed heartfelt condolences to the people of Woro and Nuku, particularly families who lost loved ones, while assuring that security agencies would intensify efforts to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
