BREAKING: Prominent Politician Dies In Plane Crash (Photo)

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar has died in a tragic plane crash after a chartered aircraft went down at Baramati airport in Maharashtra on Tuesday morning.

Pawar, 66, was among five people killed when a Learjet 45, registered VT-SSK, crash-landed shortly after 8:45 a.m.

The aircraft had taken off from Mumbai around 8:10 a.m. and was heading to Baramati, where the deputy chief minister was scheduled to attend political engagements ahead of forthcoming local government elections.

According to aviation authorities, the jet attempted to land amid reportedly poor visibility but veered off the runway during a second approach and burst into flames on impact. There were no survivors.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation confirmed that Pawar, two pilots, his personal security officer and a flight attendant all died in the incident.

Pawar was a dominant figure in Maharashtra politics, having served multiple terms as deputy chief minister across different administrations.

A nephew of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, he was known for his strong grassroots influence and strategic political role in the state.

In 2023, he led a major factional split within the Nationalist Congress Party and aligned with the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, a move that reshaped Maharashtra’s political landscape and earned his faction official recognition.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has launched a formal probe into the crash, with early indications pointing to visibility challenges, though investigators say all technical and operational factors will be examined.

Pawar is survived by his wife, Sunetra, and two sons, Parth and Jay. Family members and senior political figures are expected in Baramati as tributes continue to pour in from across India.

The incident has triggered nationwide mourning and renewed concerns over aviation safety for chartered and VIP flights.
