Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced Türkiye’s ambition to raise bilateral trade with Nigeria to $5 billion, up from the current $2 billion, following high-level talks with President Bola Tinubu during his state visit.
Speaking at a joint press briefing on Tuesday, Erdoğan commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms and described the composition of the Nigerian delegation as a strong signal of commitment to development cooperation.
He disclosed that both countries agreed to establish a Joint Economy and Trade Committee to fast-track investments and expand cooperation in trade, energy, education, and defence.
Türkiye exports aircraft, helicopters, machinery, iron and steel products, and chemicals to Nigeria while Nigeria supplies crude oil and agricultural commodities.
Erdoğan expressed optimism about deeper energy collaboration, including possible engagements between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners.
On security, the Turkish leader pledged continued support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, highlighting Türkiye’s counter-insurgency experience and its readiness to strengthen military training, intelligence sharing, and defence industry cooperation.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, thanked Türkiye for its openness to partnership, noting that Nigeria is focused on inclusive economic growth, reforms, and sustained contributions to regional and global stability.
The visit concluded with the signing of nine bilateral agreements spanning defence cooperation, economy and trade, diaspora policy, halal infrastructure, higher education, media, general education, diplomacy training, and social services and women affairs.
