Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have reportedly killed 10 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, including two senior commanders identified as Basulhu and Ubaida, his deputy, in Borno.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the troops also recovered a cache of arms and equipment during the operation.
Quoting security sources, Makama said the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 9:30 am during the ongoing Operation Desert Sanity/Siege patrol.
The publication said troops of sector 1, working with members of the civilian joint task force (CJTF) and local hunters, came under attack by insurgents who laid an ambush using a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) and small arms fire.
It noted that the troops reportedly responded with heavy fire, forcing the attackers to retreat.
“The attack was followed by the detonation of an IED, but the swift response of the troops compelled the terrorists to withdraw in disarray, with several killed and others sustaining gunshot wounds,” Makama quoted a source as saying.
Makama added that a reinforcement team from Ngoshe in Gwoza LGA moved in to block the insurgents’ withdrawal routes along the foothills of the Mandara Mountains and successfully ambushed the fleeing fighters.
The publication said the troops pursued the remnants and exploited the area, leading to the recovery of bodies and equipment.
Items recovered include three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, five motorcycles, two hand grenades, two Baofeng radios, 12 AK-47 magazines, 197 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition, one RPG charger, two detonating cords, 13 nine-volt batteries, an iron bar, a bandolier and a camel bag.
