Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, January 19, 2026 over a five count charge filed by the Department of State Services alleging cybercrime, defamation, and incitement.
The case, marked FHC ABJ CR 484 2025, is linked to social media posts made in August 2025 in which Sowore allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” and made other statements authorities claim were defamatory and capable of inciting public disorder.
Sowore was first arraigned on December 2, 2025 when he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on self recognition.
The court also restrained him from making further inciting or derogatory statements against the President pending the determination of the case.
At the latest court session, the Federal Government amended the charge sheet dated December 4, 2025, removing Meta and X as co defendants.
Sowore is now expected to enter a fresh plea before trial judge, Justice Mohammed Umar.
The prosecution maintains that the posts, allegedly published on Sowore’s verified accounts, violated provisions of the Cybercrimes Amendment Act 2024 and sections of the Criminal Code relating to defamation and incitement.
The case has continued to generate public debate, with critics raising concerns about free speech. Proceedings have been adjourned to a later date.
