Real Reasons Military Took Over In 1966 – Jibrin Ibrahim

A Senior Fellow of Centre for Democracy and Development, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, has said that corruption was a major problem in 1966.

Ibrahim made this known on Thursday while responding to questions in an interview on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television, stating that people praised the military for taking over.

He said, “The people felt corruption would be dealt with by the young military people, but it wasn’t the case.

“Tai Solarin wrote in his column that the military turned out even more corrupt than the politicians were.

“To a large extent, it depended on which part of the country you came from because to me what happened on January 15, 1966, the pattern of those who were killed and those not killed gives the whole episode and ethnic agenda. And that coloured a lot what was happening.

“But I think over and beyond that, people were conscious even at that time. There was a problem with the political system. It wasn’t delivering. Corruption had eaten deeply.

“You will recall that coup, many people came out to praise the young Army Major who plotted the coup because they felt corruption had become the real problem and would now be dealt with decisively by these young persons.”
