Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has dismissed as fake news a report claiming that the Federal Government has halted the issuance of implementation guidelines for Nigeria’s new tax laws.
Oyedele made the reaction on X on Thursday, responding to a lengthy report which alleged that uncertainty over the final versions of the tax laws had forced the government to pause further action.
The report claimed that Oyedele had directed the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) to wait, arguing that guidelines could not be issued due to doubts over whether the versions of the tax laws in circulation represented the final official documents.
It further alleged that printed copies of the tax laws were being withheld after the National Assembly reportedly took custody of all gazetted copies pending the conclusion of its internal review.
The report also cited concerns over alleged discrepancies between versions of the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and earlier gazetted copies made available to the public, suggesting that the situation had reintroduced uncertainty into the tax reform process.
However, reacting to the publication, Oyedele simply wrote: “Fake news.”
The new tax laws — including the National Revenue Service Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, Nigeria Tax Act and Joint Revenue Board Act — took effect on January 1, 2026, and have since generated intense public debate.
