Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has launched a scathing attack on fans of popular artiste, Wizkid, over what he described as repeated and disrespectful attempts to drag the name of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, into online music debates.
In a lengthy Instagram video posted on Saturday, Seun warned Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, to “keep Fela’s name out” of their arguments, accusing them of ignorance and provocation.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your (Wizkid FC) mouths. Why must you find a way to bring Fela always into your discussions?” he said.
He argued that portraying any modern musician as a “new Fela” reflected a lack of understanding of his father’s legacy, adding that such comparisons usually collapsed when fans realised they could not be sustained.
“You try to steal the man. You try to claim that this your artiste is the new Fela. Then, when you people saw that you couldn’t wear those pants, that the shoes were too big to fill, you now turn around.
“If your lack of respect came from a place of defiance, I would respect it. But your lack of respect comes from a place of ignorance. Complete ignorance,” he said.
The singer also blamed toxic fan culture for fuelling unnecessary rivalry within the music industry, urging fans to focus on appreciating music rather than provoking conflict.
He questioned why fans struggled to enjoy an artiste’s work without drawing comparisons, suggesting that persistent online drama reflected dissatisfaction rather than genuine passion.
“You know why you cannot enjoy your artiste’s music without comparing it to something else? Because the music does not fulfill your spirits. That’s why you people look for extra drama always around the art,” he said.
Seun further argued that truly impactful art should inspire reflection and calm, not constant social media battles.
Recalling previous confrontations with Wizkid’s fans, the singer said he had refused to back down in the past and would not do so again, maintaining that his father’s name should be left out of fan wars.
He stressed that Fela’s legacy was not open to debate, noting that his family had consistently welcomed other artistes and supported the wider music community through initiatives such as Felabration.
Seun concluded by warning fans to stop dragging his father’s name into contemporary music rivalries, insisting that the late Afrobeat pioneer deserved respect and should be allowed to rest.
