GBAM! Court Dissolves Marriage After Wife Complains Of Persistent Financial Hardship

An area court sitting at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin, Kwara state, has dissolved the marriage between Toyin Ajibola and his wife, Bashirat Mohammed, over a lack of funds.

Hammad Ajumonbi, the presiding judge, delivered the ruling after Bashirat approached the court seeking the dissolution of the marriage, complaining of persistent financial hardship and what she described as her husband’s irresponsibility.

“I want the court to grant me a divorce so that I can have rest of mind,” Bashirat told the court.

But Ajibola told the court that he was still interested in the marriage despite his financial difficulties.

In his ruling, Ajumonbi said that although Ajibola expressed a desire to keep the marriage, the wife should not be forced to remain in a union she no longer wanted.

The judge said Bashirat needed to move on, so as not to be stranded, and consequently ordered the dissolution of the marriage.

Ajumonbi granted custody of the three children from the marriage to the wife, while directing Ajibola to remain responsible for their feeding.

“He should have unrestricted access to the children and the mother should always make the children available any time their father requested,” the judge said.

The court also ordered Bashirat to observe a three-month iddah (waiting) period before entering into another marriage.
