Palliatives Not Solving Anything – Former Head Of State, Abdulsalami Tells Tinubu Over Hardship In Nigeria

Former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, is worried given the acute hunger, hardship, and worsening economic conditions in the country.

General Abubakar, who lamented these issues, added that the country’s situation is “getting out of control.”

The former Head of State made this known when he hosted the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights at his uphill residence in Minna, Niger State.

The group was led by Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi.

General Abubakar stressed that many Nigerians are struggling to meet their basic needs such as food and transportation.

“Everyone is complaining about the hardship, and it seems to be getting out of control. People can’t afford three square meals.

“The rise in transportation costs, fuel prices, school fees, and the lack of money in people’s pockets is making life unbearable,” he stated.

The former Nigerian leader disclosed that a forum of which he was part submitted three recommendations to the federal government on the best way to address the economic crisis.

Provision of palliatives, he stressed, can not provide a solution to the rising food prices as it is not sustainable.

According to him, the government should purchase essential food items and sell them at lower prices to make them more affordable as an intervention approach.

“The government should flood communities with food, buy and sell at reduced prices, allowing people to purchase based on their income levels,” he proposed.

Ahead of the #EndBadGovernance demonstration on October 1, the ex-Nigerian leader called for peaceful protests.

He recalled the violence and looting that characterised the past protests.

“During the last protest, we witnessed needless destruction, theft, and criminal activity. Instead of peaceful protests, people resorted to looting private homes, causing unnecessary harm,” he noted.
