BREAKING: Serving Nigerian Senator Dies Abroad

Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of a serving senator, Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Akwashiki reportedly died at the age of 52 after a protracted illness. A family source, who confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on condition of anonymity on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, said the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment.

The source described the senator’s death as a major blow to the state and the senatorial zone, noting that it has left a significant vacuum due to his strong commitment to constituency development and empowerment programmes.

“His death is a big blow and has left a big vacuum, given his commitment to the development of the senatorial zone and empowerment programmes,” the source said.

According to the family source, Akwashiki’s tenure stood out in the political history of Nasarawa North.

“Since in the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki was the best senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” he said.

The source added that the late senator’s impact was evident across communities in the constituency.

“His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency as he was the only senator that re-contested and won for a second term in the zone,” he said.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late senator was widely regarded as a committed public servant whose legislative career was rooted in grassroots politics.

His death has continued to attract tributes from political associates, constituents and supporters, who described him as a dedicated lawmaker and advocate for development.
