Alpine ski resort in southern Switzerland
Several people were killed while others sustained injuries after a fire broke out during a New Year’s party at a, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred at a popular nightlife spot in Crans-Montana, a high-end resort town in the canton of Valais.
Gaetan Lathion, spokesperson for the Valais police, said the “fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. at Le Constellation lounge bar in Crans-Montana.”
“There are several injuries and several fatalities.”
Police did not immediately provide an exact number of casualties or details on what caused the fire in the resort area, which is known for its luxury holiday destinations.
Authorities said a joint press conference involving the police and the regional public prosecutor is scheduled for around 10 a.m. (4 a.m. ET).
Crans-Montana is regarded as one of Switzerland’s most exclusive locations, renowned for its year-round sunshine due to its position on a south-facing plateau in the Rhone Valley.
Situated about 1,500 metres above sea level, the resort offers panoramic Alpine views stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, one of Europe’s highest peaks.
The town attracts visitors with its blend of understated glamour, featuring upscale shopping, fine dining, extensive ski slopes, and a vibrant après-ski culture.
Despite its global appeal, Crans-Montana has a relatively small population of about 15,000 and is known for its close-knit community, as well as being a discreet retreat for celebrities seeking skiing, golfing, and dining experiences.
