Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that the Nigerian Senate could soon be left without any opposition, as even the remaining minority senators are reportedly ready to join the ruling APC.
Akpabio stated that when the APC-led Senate assumed office, the opposition had nearly 50 senators. “Today, when I counted, there are about 5 or 4 left in the opposition. Even those five members have whispered to me that I should take them to the President as they are prepared to join the APC,” he said.
To maintain a functional minority presence, Akpabio explained that he has intentionally allowed APC senators who have declared allegiance in their states, but are yet to formally declare in the Senate, to remain in the minority caucus. He also thanked Governor Peter Mbah for ensuring that Senator Ositangu retained the position of Chief Whip of the Minority. “Otherwise, this place would have been empty,” he added.
Akpabio emphasized inclusivity in Senate operations, urging that all senators, regardless of party affiliation, should be carried along. “Stakeholders coming in from other political parties must be given equal opportunities to thrive. There must not be any discrimination,” he said.
He also addressed broader national issues, including insecurity and humanitarian crises, praising the government for the release of over 100 kidnapped children and calling for prayers for the safe return of remaining victims.
“This is a time of growth and challenge. With growth comes envy and jealousy, and with jealousy comes hatred,” Akpabio said, urging unity and cooperation among senators.
