Armed Herders Kill Four, Kidnap Women In Fresh Benue Attack

At least four individuals have reportedly lost their lives, several women were brutally tortured, and another person is missing following attacks by suspected armed herders on the Udei and Nzorov communities in Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

The violent incidents are said to have occurred Monday evening when a group of displaced residents went to collect firewood at Tse Nyamkume Village along the Yogbo-Udei Road.

The victims were returning to Udei, where they had sought refuge after fleeing earlier attacks in their home communities.

One of the victims, Kenneth Gbayier, a native of Mbalagh, had relocated to Udei for safety after previous assaults on his village. Gbayier was reportedly with another young man from Saawuan Gboodo Village and several women when they were ambushed by the armed attackers.

According to a community source, Gbayier was shot and hacked multiple times on his legs and head, suffering injuries that ultimately led to his death.

“The attackers opened fire on them and then used machetes. Kenneth did not survive the brutal assault.

“The women in the group were captured and severely tortured by the attackers, while the second young man managed to escape into the nearby bush as the assailants chased him. He still remains missing, with no trace of his whereabouts as we speak,” the source said.

The source added that the attacks happened just two days after another deadly ambush along Ajimaka Road, where two Tiv travelers and a security officer escorting them were killed by armed herders.

Another farmer was also reportedly macheted near the Ahentse axis of Nzorov Council Ward in Guma LGA within the same timeframe.

He expressed concern over the relentless incursions by armed herders, noting that farmlands are being destroyed, food insecurity is worsening, and the humanitarian situation in the state is deteriorating.

“We are therefore calling on security personnel to urgently intervene before the situation escalates further.

“Also residents of Udei and neighboring communities have been warned to exercise extreme caution, as movement along bush paths and rural routes have become increasingly dangerous due to the persistent attacks,” he emphasized.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Udeme Edet, stated that she had not received any reports of the incidents.
