My Husband Sent Thugs To Beat Me, Destroy My Wares, Woman Tells Court 

A woman, Muibat, has dragged her husband, Alli, before Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking that it dissolve their wedlock on the grounds that he was irresponsible, a drunk, gambler and in habit of threatening his life.

Muibat stated that Alli constantly neglected her and their only child and failed in his responsibilities towards them.

The plaintiff explained that the defendant was fond of complaining of paucity of fund but that he would visit joints and clubs, drink himself to stupour and stagger home.

She also stated that her family lived in penury because her husband would gamble with the money left on him after drinking.

Muibat said that she single-handedly bore the responsibility of their home, feeding and clothing her husband and child from her meager income.

According to the plaintiff, the defendant rather than show appreciation for all her efforts took to harassing and threatening her life, thus making peace to desert her.

Muibat stated that Alli hired thugs who came to her shop to beat her and destroy her wares.

She added that he later abandoned her and their child.

The plaintiff prayed the court to dissolve their marriage so that she could move on with her life.

She pleaded for the custody of their child and begged the court to make her husband responsible for his welfare.

Muibat in addition, requested an order restraining her husband from threatening and interfering with her private life.

Alli made an appearance the first day the case came up and agreed to divorce and also that his wife had custody of their child, but refused to attend court sessions on other adjourned dates.

Muibat in her testimony said, “My lord, I am better off being single than being regarded as a married woman.

“I lived in hardship and penury throughout the years I spent with my husband in marriage.

“Although he paid my bride price, he had always presented himself as an irresponsible fellow from the outset of our marriage.

“It was hard to find a dime on my husband because of his reckless lifestyle.

“He was a regular face at joints and clubs where he spent his daily income.

“My husband always drank himself to stupour and would stagger home late at night disturbing the whole nieghbourhood.

“My lord, he not only drank, but also gambled which added to his wretchedness.

“We always had little or nothing to eat and live on because I was the one solely running our home with my meager income.

“I laboured day and night to feed my husband and child, and also clothed them and my husband felt comfortable with it.

“The more I complained, the worse my husband became.

“My husband,rather appreciates me later took to harassing and threatening me.

“I lost my peace at home because he made our home too hot for comfort.

“He once hired thugs who came to my shop to beat me and destroy my wares.

“He later abandoned me and our child and refused to return home.

“My lord, I want to move on with my life.

“I, therefore pray this honourable court to dissolve our union and grant me custody of our child.

“I also entreat the court to mandate him to be responsible for our child’s upkeep, giving feeding, education and health care preference.

“I further request an order restraining him from threatening and interfering with my private life.”

The president of the court, Mrs S.M Akintayo stated that since both parties stated that they were no longer interested in their union, it was proper for the court to grant both their relief.

Akintayo thus ruled that their union was dissolved.

She granted the plaintiff custody of their eight-year-old child being still young and in need of a motherly care.

She mandated the defendant to be responsible for their child’s upkeep giving feeding, education and health care proper attention.

She further gave an order restraining the defendant from threatening and interfering with the plaintiff’s private life.
