SSCE: What Students Need To Know About New Subjects – FG Clarifies

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued clarifications in response to challenges observed following the recent changes in the senior secondary school curriculum.

The government explained that these clarifications were prompted by a surge of calls, correspondence, and public concerns, especially from students registering for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), due to misinterpretations circulating in various media outlets.

Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa, in a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, emphasised that all subjects available on the SSCE registration portal remain accessible, provided students’ choices are properly guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counsellors.

He stressed that there is no restriction or exclusion on any approved subject within the curriculum.

Dr Alausa noted that a science student may select subjects classified as social sciences or arts, just as arts or social science students may opt for subjects within the sciences. He stated that the curriculum is designed to be flexible, student-centred, and supportive of varied academic interests and career paths.

Addressing the subject previously titled Information and Communication Technology (ICT), the Minister explained it has been renamed Digital Technology, clarifying the change is in name only—curriculum content remains unchanged. “Hence, students who previously took ICT are fully eligible to register for Digital Technology.”

Regarding Trade Subjects, Dr Alausa noted that six trade subjects are now approved within the curriculum. “A student may register for any of these if the school offers the subject and the student has been taught it. However, there is no obligation for a student to register for any trade subject as a third subject if not previously exposed to or taught the subject,” he clarified.

The minister reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to a smooth, inclusive, and well-guided rollout of the revised curriculum. He urged all stakeholders—parents, school proprietors, counsellors, and examination bodies—to rely on verified information and offer proper guidance to students as WAEC registration progresses.

He reassured that the Ministry will continue to ensure a seamless, accurate, and coordinated registration process nationwide.
