The Presidency has defended the inclusion of former INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu; ex-Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode; and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recently submitted ambassadorial nominees, citing a combination of loyalty, national service, and strategic competence.
Demola Oshodi, Senior Special Assistant (Protocol) to the President, spoke on Arise News The Morning Show, explaining that appointments inevitably attract both support and opposition, but must maintain balance to serve the administration’s objectives.
“We voted for him. We give him the right to choose his executives, so we have to trust his judgment,” Oshodi said, adding that Nigerians should understand the President’s considerations in ensuring a successful government.
Oshodi, while addressing questions about the selection of Yakubu, Omokri, and Fani-Kayode, said their appointments are political and strategic, highlighting that non-career diplomats are often chosen for their loyalty and understanding of the administration’s vision.
“Looking at the professor’s [Yakubu] career, he has been in charge of Nigeria’s electoral body for many years, overseeing the 2019 and 2023 elections, which were generally considered successful,” he said.
“These non-career diplomats are political. Their first priority is loyalty. They have been loyal to the administration and understand its vision.”
On Yakubu’s specific qualifications, Oshodi added that national service, ethnic and state balance, and overall competence were key factors. “I don’t know specifically the President’s judgment on the professor, but his national service has been exemplary. That is why he has been rewarded with this high office,” he said.
Regarding Fani-Kayode, Oshodi argued that personal controversies do not disqualify individuals from serving in diplomatic roles. “The President’s reason for appointing diplomats is based on how he assesses their competence and capacity. Some countries and situations require certain skills and attributes,” he said.
He added, “Mr Fani-Kayode has served this country in many capacities. Being divisive does not eliminate him from serving further. Everyone’s personal life is personal. The President’s decision is based on national service and, in many ways, a balance of competence.”
Oshodi’s comments follow the submission of the ambassadorial list to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation, a move that has sparked significant public debate.
