President Bola Tinubu did not cancel his planned trips to South Africa and Angola, Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, explained the reasons on Tuesday.
According to Olusegun, the G20 Summit is being held in Africa for the first time, which is a major moment for the continent.
He said Tinubu’s presence would show that Nigeria recognises the importance of this event and would allow him to speak on Africa’s future in global affairs.
He added that Tinubu plans to build on the progress made at the last G20 Summit in Rio. The president will meet with global partners to discuss world economic issues and explore new business opportunities for Nigeria.
This includes strengthening existing relationships and creating new ones with business leaders and investors.
Security will also be a major focus at the summit. The meeting gives Tinubu a chance to explain Nigeria’s security challenges and form stronger regional and global partnerships to fight terrorism both in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa.
Olusegun said that Nigeria’s ongoing reforms will also be discussed at the summit.
To make sure governance continues smoothly while the president is away, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been assigned to visit Kebbi State, where schoolgirls were kidnapped this week.
He added that security agencies have been directed to give top priority to the rescue efforts, showing that operations at home are still active.
Olusegun concluded that this is a clear division of responsibilities: the President is focusing on international and strategic solutions at the G20, while the Vice President and security chiefs handle immediate issues within Nigeria.
