FLASH: Wike-backed PDP Faction Summons Emergency NEC, BoT Meetings

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed has summoned an emergency meeting of its national executive committee (NEC) and board of trustees (BoT) for Tuesday.

The meeting will take place at the PDP national secretariat in Wadata Plaza in Abuja.

A notice signed by Samuel Anyanwu, an ally of Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said the BoT is expected to convene at 11am.

The NEC session has been fixed for 2pm at the same venue.

The party said attendance is compulsory because “crucial matters” will be considered.

The invitation marks the 103rd emergency NEC meeting of the PDP.

Lere Olayinka, media aide to Wike, shared the notice on his X page on Monday.

Over the weekend, a faction led by Umar Damagum, immediate past national chairman, held the party’s national convention in Ibadan.

The faction at the convention expelled Wike, Anyanwu and Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti.

Others removed from the party include Umar Bature, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Mao Ohabunwa, Uwachukwu, George Turner, Dan Orbih, Abdulrahman, Austin Nwachukwu and Abraham Amah.

Present at the convention were Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi; Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa; Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara; Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo.

Ladi Adebutu, Ogun state governorship candidate of the PDP in 2023; Natasha Akpoti, senator representing Kogi central; Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger state; and Kabiru Turaki, a former minister and the consensus candidate for national chairman, were also in attendance.

Also present were Ibrahim Shekarau, former Kano governor; Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the BoT; and Bode George, a member of the BoT.

Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun; and Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba; were notably absent from the convention venue.

Mutfwang and Fintiri, who were also at the venue, had distanced themself from the expulsion of the FCT minister.

However, in a statement on Saturday evening, Olayinka said those present at the convention decided to “start dirty December in November”, adding that “one can’t but ignore whatever comes out of their mouths”.

The FCT minister’s spokesperson added that the decisions made at the event were irrelevant, noting that “they are free to say anything”.

“They went to Ibadan to start dirty December in November,” the statement reads.

The Wike-led PDP faction had sought to halt the convention through the courts, but the other faction secured a high court judgment in Oyo allowing the event to proceed.
