A NATION IN MOURNING: NAUS SENATE DECRIES GENOCIDAL INSECURITY IN NORTHERN NIGERIA, CALLS FOR URGENT STATE OF EMERGENCY

The Senate of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), the highest legislative body representing the interests of millions of Nigerian students, today raises a profound and sorrowful voice against the escalating, genocidal insecurity ravaging the Northern part of our country.

We speak with heavy hearts, burdened by the grief that has become the daily bread of countless students across our campuses. We are not merely observers; we are victims. We have received countless harrowing testimonies from our members who hail from states like Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, and Plateau. These are not distant statistics; they are our colleagues, our friends, our roommates—young men and women whose lives have been irrevocably shattered.

A Generation Orphaned by Violence

Many of our students have now joined the grim ranks of the orphaned. They have lost fathers, mothers, siblings, and entire family lineages to the senseless violence of bandits, terrorists, and criminal elements who operate with impunity. The dreams they carry in their lecture halls are now overshadowed by the trauma of attending the burials of those they loved most. How does a student concentrate on Thermodynamics or Literary Theory when the memory of their parents’ abduction or murder is their constant companion?

Beyond Religious and Tribal Narratives: A National Genocide

While some have sought to frame this crisis through a narrow lens, we state categorically that what is happening in Northern Nigeria is not a “Christian genocide” alone. It is a comprehensive genocide, a harvest of death that knows no religious or tribal boundaries. Farmers in their fields, Muslims breaking their fast, Christians in their places of worship, travellers on our highways, and entire villages have been wiped out. The blood that waters the land is both red and united in its suffering—it is the blood of Nigerians.

This is a human catastrophe that has consumed Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, Berom, and every other tribe. It has decimated both the mosque and the church. To label it otherwise is to play into the divisive hands of the very forces that seek to destroy our national fabric. We stand united in grief and in our demand for justice.

Our Demands to the Federal Government

The Nigerian student body can no longer bear this weight. Our academic pursuits are meaningless if our future is being slaughtered today. Therefore, the NAUS Senate hereby presents the following demands:

1. Declaration of a State of Emergency on Security: We demand that the Federal Government immediately declares a full state of emergency on security in the most affected Northern states. This is no longer a situation for conventional approaches; it requires a wartime strategy.

2. Comprehensive and Equitable Support for Victims: We call for the establishment of a special federal fund to provide comprehensive psychological, financial, and academic support for students who have lost their parents and guardians to this violence. Their education must not be another casualty.

3. Urgent Re-equipping and Re-motivation of Security Forces: Our security agencies must be provided with superior firepower, advanced technology for intelligence gathering, and all necessary resources to not only combat but decisively defeat these non-state actors.

4. A National Summit on Insecurity: We demand the immediate convocation of a National Summit on Insecurity, with genuine representation from affected communities, including student leaders from these regions, to find lasting solutions.

A Final Word

We are the leaders of tomorrow, but today, we are a generation in mourning. Our patience has run out. Our grief is turning into a righteous anger that cannot, and will not, be ignored. We shall be mobilizing our members across all campuses for peaceful protests and engagements until concrete action is taken.

The soul of our nation is at stake. We call on all well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organizations, and the international community to stand with us as we demand back our peace, our security, and our future.
