A 19-year-old Nigerian student, Marvelous Ugochukwu, has been confirmed dead after a truck driver ran a red light and crashed into a car, a bus stop shelter, a fence line, and a light pole at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Elphinstone Street in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Multiple witnesses said the teenager was in a bus shelter where the truck went and hit her.
Already, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Ugochukwu family with funeral and probably legal expenses.
According to the GoFundMe page: “The family of Marvellous Ugochukwu Chijindu seeks your financial support to reconcile the final expenses they will accrue in the investigation, settlements and burial rituals of their 19 year old daughter & sister who was killed by a truck while at the bus stop on Sunday, the 12th of October in Regina,Saskatchewan.”
The fund has generated $17,400CAD.
“The driver was trying to beat the red light,” one witness said. “He ran into the teenager who was sitting at the bus shelter. It was a terrible scene,” one of our sources said.
Sources confirmed that Regina Police Service shut down the busy intersection following the fatal crash, which occurred last Sunday.
“The Regina Police Service has closed down Dewdney & Elphinstone after a transport truck reportedly ran a red light colliding with a car, a bus stop shelter, fence line, and light pole. Several reports said a woman was waiting in the bus stop and was fatally struck. The driver of the car was transported to hospital, and the driver of the transport truck was reportedly taken into custody on scene by police,” Just Bins; a waste disposal firm notable for breaking stories related to Regina, wrote in a Facebook post.
It was gathered that emergency responders pronounced Ms Ugochukwu dead at the scene, while the driver of the car involved in the crash was rushed to a hospital after sustaining serious injuries. Police immediately took the truck driver into custody for questioning.
The tragic death of the young Nigerian student triggered shockwaves in Regina, especially among the Nigerian student community.
Candle light procession for Ms Ugochukwu is scheduled for today.
The Skilled Truckers Canada mourned the teenager on their facebook page with commenters consoling the deceased’s family and seeking justice for the dead.
