GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that Senator Kelvin Chukwu, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from Labour Party (LP).
The senator, who represents Enugu East senatorial district, defected on Wednesday on the floor of the senate, citing what he described as the âdestabilised stateâ of the LP.
National Assembly watchers observe that Senator Chukwu is one of the âdormantâ lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber.
Commenting on the defection, Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele said Chukwuâs defection is a testament to the fact that the âAPC is doing well.â
However, the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP Benue South), reminded Senator Chukwu that he came to the Senate on âsympathy vote.â
Recall that Kelvin Chukwu was given the LPâs Enugu East ticket, on compassionate grounds, to replace his older brother, Oyibo Chukwu, who was the original holder of the ticket.
Oyibo Chukwu was murdered in February 2023, shortly before the yearâs general election, in what many believed was a political assassination.
Senator Moro however said he would reserve the story of the defection of Senator Chukwu âfor another day.â
The defection of the Enugu East senator has now raised the number of APC senators to a controlling majority of 73.
The Senate is a 109-member legislative house.
