2027: I’ll Back Any Candidate Who Pays Me First’ – Portable

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has declared that he will support the first presidential candidate who pays him ahead of the 2027 elections.

Portable’s remarks come as President Bola Tinubu’s administration faces public criticism over economic hardship and calls for electoral reforms.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has consistently warned that vote-buying undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

So far, only President Tinubu, endorsed by the APC, and Peter Obi, who announced his bid in July, have signalled clear intentions for 2027. Other names remain speculative, while economic hardship and vote-buying fears intensify public debate.

In a Thursday video on his Instagram page, the Zazuu crooner said politicians seeking his support must provide financial assistance before earning loyalty.

The Ogun State-born singer said, “The election is starting soon. Anybody who gives me money that can help my life is the one I will vote for.” He added that he could not “campaign around and be hungry.”

Portable also mentioned Nigeria’s major political parties and candidates, stating that his allegiance would go to the highest bidder. “If APC brings money first, they own me. If it’s PDP, I will collect. Even if it’s Peter Obi or Atiku, I will tell you to vote for him,” he said.

The 31-year-old musician urged his followers to adopt the same stance, advising them to consider only candidates who provide financial help.

“My fan, do you have your voter’s card already? Who are you voting for? We will vote for the candidate who gives us money,” he said.

He also described politicians who give financial incentives as “helpers,” stressing that hunger in the country makes such assistance a moral responsibility. “I am the owner of my life and my voter’s card. People are hungry. Bring money, help me so I can help my people,” he added.

History
This is not the first time Portable has waded into politics.

In 2024, the singer alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged his services without compensation during the 2023 presidential campaign for Bola Tinubu.

In May 2023, Portable, who described himself as non-partisan during the general election, accused the ruling party of ingratitude after he was excluded from the list of artists that performed at the inauguration concert for President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, tagged ‘Renewed Hope Concert.’

Earlier in 2022, Portable openly campaigned for the APC during the Osun State governorship election, which drew criticism. He infamously campaigned for the PDP and the Accord party around the same time.
