The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has announced that it will audit public and private buildings across the country following the September 16 fire outbreak at Afriland Tower on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
Controller-General of the FFS, Samuel Adeyemi Olumode, made the announcement on Thursday.
The CG said an investigation team has been deployed to establish the causes of the incident, review safety systems and check compliance with fire safety regulations.
According to him, the findings of the investigation will be made public and the recommendations implemented without delay.
The FFS urged facility owners and managers to review their safety readiness, secure inverter and generator rooms, unblock exit pathways, ensure alarms are functional and train staff.
Olumode commiserated with Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Tony Elumelu, Chairman of UBA, as well as the management and staff of the affected organisations and families of the deceased.
He prayed for the repose of the departed and comfort for their loved ones.
Olumode commended the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for supporting the enactment of the Federal Fire and Rescue Act, which he said will usher in a new culture of prevention and accountability.
