ADC Only Opposition Party In Nigeria; PDP, LP Only Exist On Paper — Kenneth Okonkwo

A lawyer and member of the coalition, Kenneth Okonkwo, on Friday said that the African Democratic Congress has established itself as the opposition voice in the country.

Okonkwo said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) only exist on paper as their leaders either support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the ADC, the political party adopted by the opposition coalition.

“Strictly speaking, there is no longer any party like the PDP or LP. They are just existing on paper because whoever is in the PDP is either supporting the APC or the ADC. That’s what it is,” he stated on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

“If the leaders of the PDP have come out openly to say they are supporting the presidential candidate of another political party, that’s the end of the party.

“You are there when a Wike who is supposed to be a leader of the PDP had told you openly that he was going to support the presidential candidate of another political party. So, where is he?

“And he had told you that anything and anybody that goes against whatever he says, he will ignite fire in his state. And he has told you that whatever he says is law. And in fairness to him, it has been like that,” Okonkwo, who was one of the spokespersons for Obi as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, added.

He noted that the Labour Party lacked the structure to stand a chance in the 2027 presidential election.

“The ADC is the only political party that is the opposition party,” he said.

Asked whether the ADC should adopt Obi as its presidential candidate and whether he (Okonkwo) would be on his (the former governor’s) side, he said, “No, the ADC is going to a democratic, free, fair presidential primary election, and whoever emerges, the party will support the person against Tinubu in 2027. That is the democratic thing to do.

“The ADC is courting every Nigerian without any preference for anybody because in 2027, it’s going to be the people of Nigeria against the APC, and the ADC is that alternative that they should have.”

The coalition has several top politicians as members.

On July 2, 2025, a former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, alongside Obi, a former Senate president, David Mark, ex-minister Rauf Aregbesola, ex-minister Rotimi Amaechi, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, among others, adopted the ADC as the platform of the opposition coalition to win the 2027 presidential poll.

Atiku (formerly of the PDP) and Obi are considered as key members of the coalition.

But the ruling APC has said that President Tinubu will prevail against any coalition.

On June 25, 2025, President Tinubu described those at the forefront of forming a coalition to unseat him ahead of the 2027 presidential election as persons who had been internally displaced politically.

He also urged his supporters not to pay attention to his political opponents as they were in a coalition to unseat themselves.

“Just don’t pay them any attention. They are the political IDPs. Don’t give them a home. The hope is here,” he said at a one-day presidential state visit to Nasarawa State where he inaugurated projects.
