The Dangote Group has reacted to the death of Ruth Otabor, the younger sister of reality TV star, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor generally known as Phyna, who was confirmed dead earlier today by her family lawyer.
In a statement uploaded on the company’s official X account on Sunday night, the management expressed sadness over the development, describing it as a tragic loss.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Otabor, who was injured in the recent road incident involving one of our trucks in Auchi, Edo State. On behalf of the entire Dangote Group, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read in part.
The tragic accident, which occurred on August 18, 2025, in Auchi, Edo State, left Ruth severely injured. According to the statement, Dangote Group officials and insurance partners had been providing financial and medical support to the victim’s family since the incident.
“Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today,” the company said.
The management added that safety, accountability, and compassion remain central to its operations while assuring the public of a continued commitment to strengthening safety systems.
Tribune Online earlier reported that Ruth’s death was officially confirmed in the early hours of Sunday at about 6:30 a.m. by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the family.
Ruth had been involved in a tragic accident on Wednesday, August 13, near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, when a truck belonging to the Dangote Group crushed her leg.
She underwent amputation just days after graduating from Auchi Polytechnic, but succumbed to complications from the incident.
