Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared that voter registration is no longer merely a civic duty but a compulsory obligation for every eligible citizen in the state.
The governor made the declaration on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness at the Government House.
He charged the committee to ensure that at least 10 million voters are captured in the ongoing nationwide registration exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, acknowledged the assignment as tough but vital to strengthening democracy.
“You should know that your exercise is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise.”
He explained that the committee’s mandate is to monitor polling units across the state and ensure that citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He further urged the committee to work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee the availability of voter cards.
“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness,” Ibrahim said.
“We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development,” he said.
