The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed remarks by Datti Baba-Ahmed, running mate to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election, over his criticism of the opposition coalition.
Baba-Ahmed, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, alleged that the coalition was “deceiving Nigerians” and lacked the capacity to rescue the country from underdevelopment. He also signalled his readiness to run again with Obi in 2027.
Reacting in a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC described the comments as “personal opinions” that do not represent the stance of the coalition or its members.
“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal views and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners,” the party said.
The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the alliance of opposition figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, former Minister Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and Obi himself—towards building a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2027.
According to the statement, the coalition was formed after wide consultations to put national interest above partisan divides and to produce competent and compassionate leadership.
The ADC also noted that Obi had previously endorsed the coalition, stressing that no single group can transform Nigeria alone. It reiterated his call for unity to tackle poverty, insecurity, and poor governance.
The party urged Baba-Ahmed to join the coalition’s efforts, describing him as a respected voice.
“Since the coalition is a collective project requiring the strength of all patriots, we sincerely hope Senator Baba-Ahmed comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” the party said.
