Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised Nigeria’s security agencies for their recent successes in the fight against terrorism, following the arrest of two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group.
The arrests were disclosed last Saturday by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who described the operation as a “high-risk, intelligence-led, counter-terrorism mission” carried out between May and July 2025.
Responding to the concerns in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, Obi described the arrest of the terrorist leaders as a positive step forward.
Obi commended the bravery and sacrifices of security personnel, noting that their efforts under harsh conditions reflected true dedication to safeguarding the nation.
“Our gallant officers and men in uniform have continued to display courage, often under extremely challenging circumstances.
“Their sacrifices are a reminder that Nigeria can—and must—be safe for all its citizens. I salute their professionalism and urge that they be better trained, equipped, and motivated to sustain these gains,” he said.
While acknowledging recent successes, Obi cautioned against complacency, insisting that justice must be pursued to prevent impunity.
“Beyond the arrests, vigilance is key. Terrorism and violent crimes thrive when justice is denied, especially when offenders return to society without accountability. Justice must take its full course so that impunity is not encouraged,” he warned.
The former Anambra governor further emphasised that security remained the foundation of national growth and urged leaders to demonstrate political will by providing adequate resources and support to security agencies.
“Let this victory remind us that security is the cornerstone of meaningful development.
“A secure Nigeria is possible, and we must work together to give our security agencies the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our country,” Obi added.
He reaffirmed his vision for a “new Nigeria” built on peace, justice, and sustainable development.
